Police Department Divisions
Administrative Division
The Salina Police Department's Administrative Division is comprised of units that are necessary for the effective direction and control of the department. The division is headed by the chief of police, and is comprised of the Office of the Chief of Police and the Internal Affairs Unit.
Detective Division
The Detective Division is headed by the Detective Division Captain.
While the primary responsibility for the investigation of most crimes rests with patrol officers, officers seldom have the time to become involved in complex or lengthy investigations. In these cases, assistance and follow-up are provided by detective personnel, who also have the primary responsibility for the investigation of major crimes such as homicides and rapes. The Detective Division is also responsible for the investigation of vice and organized crime as well as criminal intelligence collection and dissemination.
Patrol Division
The police departments patrol officers are the backbone of the department and provide round-the-clock police services to the citizens and visitors of our community. They are an eclectic and diverse group of dedicated men and women from a wide range of ages and ethnic backgrounds. A typical day in the life of a patrol officer may include: routine patrol, traffic enforcement, responding to alarms, assisting citizens, providing traffic control at accident or fire scenes, preparing detailed reports, making arrests, attending training, performing security at public meetings, recovering lost property, assisting the Salina Animal Shelter, conducting business and bar checks, and many, many other tasks. Patrol officers are assigned to one of six beats in Salina. All beats are staffed full-time, with extra officers covering the busiest areas during times of peak activity.
Support Division
The Salina Police Department's Support Division is responsible for overseeing most of the ancillary services necessary to keep patrol units operating. This division is headed by the Support Captain.The support division includes the Emergency Communications Unit, Records Unit, Training Unit, and School Resource Officers. The Support Division provides services and support personnel who make field operations possible and contributes to the effective management of department resources. The division commander also has the responsibility to prepare, monitor, and manage budget activities for the department, ensuring that sound fiscal management techniques are followed.
