Citizen's Academy
The Citizen's Academy is a joint venture between the Salina Police Department and the Saline County Sheriff's Office who believe a community and government partnership is important to providing services and meeting the needs of a growing city and county population.
The goal of the Citizen's Academy is to provide members of the community with an inside look at the various units of the Police Department and the Sheriff's office, to help create better understanding and communication between citizens and police through education. When the community and law enforcement become cooperative partners, they form a powerful alliance, capable of addressing community issues and concerns. The Citizen's Police Academy is designed to acquaint citizens with law enforcement practices and services and acquaint officers with citizen concerns and perceptions in the community.
The mission of the Citizen's Academy is to build better understanding between citizens and law enforcement through education and positive interaction.
Topic Discussions may include:
- Firearms & drug recognition
- Firearms & drug recognition
- Narcotics Unit
- Criminal investigations
- Crime scene protection and data gathering
- Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT)
- Police firearm techniques
- Court procedures
- Jail and booking procedures
- 9-1-1 Communications Center
- Department tour
- Virtra 300 Simulator
- Ride-along with a patrol officer (optional)
An Advanced Citizen's academy is also offered to those who have graduated from the Citizen's Academy.
Requirements:
- 21 Years of age or older
- Live or work in Saline County, Kansas
- No felony convictions
- No misdemeanor arrests within one year of application
